Braves trade Javier Vazquez to the Yankees for Melky Cabrera

Joel Sherman of the New York Post has confirmed that the Yankees have acquired Javier Vazquez and LHP Boone Logan from the Braves for outfielder Melky Cabrera, LHP Mike Dunn and RHP Arodys Vizcaino.

This an interesting pick up for the Yankees. During his first tenure in the Bronx, Vazquez put up less then stellar numbers. He had an ERA of 4.91 but still managed at 14 and 10 record. Most pitchers are capable of having a good win loss record with the Yankees. I am surprised to see Brian Cashman take another chance on Vazquez. Vazquez is notorious for folding under pressure. It seems as though he only thrives in “non-relevant” games.

This trade does help the Braves who were in need of a an outfielder having Ryan Church and Matt Diaz to man the corners. Cabrera posted a .274 average last season driving in 68 with 13 home runs.

  1. Terrible trade. Cabrera was a good up and coming outfielder and would have been perfect for left field. Must mean they are going to make a move for a left fielder?????

  2. Ok TCP is wrong and i dont know why Andrew is trying to spin this deal as a negative for the Yanks.

Cabreras defense is not phenomnal and for a corner outfielder his numbers are not that impressive. He is entering into his second year of arbitration so pretty soon he isnt going to be as cheap. He has 4 years of big league experience, he wont continue to be the 3 mil a year bargain. It was no secret the Yanks wanted to move him. There are more corner outfielders available then there are pitchers and quality starters at that.

And dont get me wrong i dont love Javier Vazquez but look at this, he has logged over 200 innings the past 3 seasons and thrown 26 complete games in his career. His ERA is a touch over 4 for his career and he has won more games than he has lost. Bottom line, he is a work horse! He will help lighten the load on CC so maybe he wont have to throw 250 innings, allows the bullpen to be more rested up for AJs occasional busted outing and does nothing but help Pettitte pitch longer and stronger into the dog days of summer. Thats right Javier Vazquez is the number 4, the Yanks number 4 slot in the rotation will be filled by a guy that had a 2.87 ERA last year!!!!

Please explain to me how this is a bad move? It does nothing but make the Yankees better over all. I mean Melky Cabrera for goodness sakes, he wasnt even the the biggest player the yanks moved. Vizcaino is more likely to come back and haunt the yanks than Melky (Arodys is a stud, 96 on the gun with movement and a dirty little curveball). However, New York wants to win now, and thats how the roster is assembled so this move makes complete sense.

  3. Orphan…can you really be serious? How about go and find a young guy that you can keep around for a couple years if your gonna move two of your better younger players. Your an idiot and know exactly 0 percent of anything

  4. Ok, you say i know 0 percent of anything, but you cant even formulate a literate response. We are talking about Melky Cabrerra. Lets be serious here! The average batting average was somewhere around .270 this past year, Melky hit .276 and 13 HRs and 68 RBIs is well below average for corner outfielders as well. Why is this such a horrible move? I fail to see your logic. And dont tell me you dont like the move because of Arodys. He is a single A prospect and it is impossible to predict if he will pan out. So get off the Melky Loving Train. He is average, and the Yankees know it, they are trying to win now and Melky doesnt fit, but Vazquez does and thats the truth.

  5. I have to agree with Alex on the anti-Melky love train. He is an average player and the Yankees don’t need him. While I am not a big fan of Javy Vazquez, especially as an AL pitcher ,he is a great No. 4 starter for the Yankees. If the Braves held on to Javy he would have most likely been their ace going into the season. This was an example of teams trading away their strengths to fill other holes. The Braves still have an excellent rotation with Hanson, Jurrjens, Hudson, Lowe, and Kawakami. The Yankees obviously don’t really need any offensive help, but could have used another arm in the rotation. The Braves now have a solid young outfield with McLouth, No. 1 prospect Jason Heyward, and Melky. I see the logic from both sides even though I am not a big fan of either Vazquez or Melky. To see how overrated Vazquez is just look at his stats in the AL with the Yanks and Sox. As far as Melky, he is far from untouchable and hopefully his career takes off in the NL.

  6. You may not be able to predict how Arodys will pan out, but he is a huge piece to this trade. The Braves farm system has the potential to produce an incredibly dynamic rotation within the next several seasons… Hanson, Jurrjens, Teheran, Vizcaino, Delgado, Locke. Also, keep in mind that prospects are highly regarded in the trade market. Additionally, Dunn is one of the most hyped southpaws in the minors, strengthening an already burly pen. That being said, the smart move for the braves would have been to take a Juan Rivera-esque player and eat a chunk of Lowe’s remaining 3yr/$45 million salary. Even though Vazquez’s performance will most likely digress next season, he would have had huge trade draw to a contender at the deadline.
