The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Mark Cuban is interested in buying the Los Angeles Dodgers, as the Dodgers’ ownership may be on shaky ground due to Frank McCourt’s impending divorce. Cuban would surely make for an interesting owner. He would be able to give the Steinbrenner’s a run for their money in the spending department and that would make any fan salivate (despite what we may say in public).
However, baseball is notoriously stingy with whom they let into their “Boys Club.” Cuban, unsuccessfully, pursued a bid for the Chicago Cubs last year. He has also expressed interest in purchasing his hometown Pittsburgh Pirates. I doubt Cuban’s bid would be taken seriously. Especially with the antics he has displayed court side at the Dallas Mavericks’ games. The ownership in Major League Baseball does not take kindly to those who would “rock the boat” or spoil that invisible division between them and what occurs on the field. Would Cuban be a good owner? Yes, but only if it’s for the team you support. Otherwise, he would just be the owner that turned the Dodgers into a Yankeesesque franchise that financially torments the National League West for years to come.
